The Best Battery-Powered Pellet Grills for 2023

  1. Best Overall Pellet Grill: Halo Prime 300
  2. Best Value Pellet Grill: Pit Boss 150 Battery Powered

Best Overall Pellet Grill

Halo Prime 300 ($549)

MSRP: $549
Type: Tabletop (portable), Battery powered
Total Grilling Area: 300 square inches
Main Grilling Area/Secondary Grilling Area: 219 square inches/ 81 square inches
Weight: 48 pounds
Temperature Range: 180°F to 500°F
Hopper Capacity: 10 pounds of Wood Pellets
What I Like: Battery powered, solid construction, great digital display and control dial, consistent temperatures
What I don’t: Battery sold separately, no wifi or Bluetooth connectivity

The Halo Prime 300 portable pellet grill is the world’s first battery-powered pellet grill. The Prime 300 is powered by a 12-volt rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can run up to 15 hours on a single charge. Featuring a spacious 300 square-inch grilling area, you can take this grilling and smoking powerhouse tailgating or to a remote campsite without worrying about where you will plug it in.

The first thing you will notice with the Halo Prime 300 is the build quality. Halo really spared no expense with the fit and finish of each component. The handle is very heavy duty and the premium hinges allow the lid to easily and smoothly glide open. The first time you open this grill you can feel the quality in craftsmanship.

The Prime 300 features a beautiful digital display that offers great contrast in all weather and lighting conditions. The display is large so there is no problem reading the temperature of the grill. The grill is controlled completely by a large round button under the digital display that is very intuitive to use.

Unfortunately, the battery and charging dock is sold separately for an extra $70. Since this is one of the biggest features it would have been nice if they included one battery with the grill. That being said, the battery itself is very small and charges quickly. The runtime is incredible. I was able to smoke a pork butt at 225 degrees for 11 hours on one charge. When I tested the total run time I was able to get just over 15 hours at 225 degrees.

Pit Boss has made a name for making quality pellet grills that are affordable and packed with features. The Pit Boss 150 Battery Powered Portable wood pellet grill is an updated version of the popular portable Pit Boss 150. The new battery-powered model looks very similar to the old 150. The difference of course is that this model can run either with the battery or by plugging it into an electrical outlet. If you are using the battery only you can expect up to 15 hours of run time!

The Pit Boss 150 Battery Powered pellet grill gives you the ability to grill, smoke, roast, or sear on the go, without having to worry about finding a power source. The patented adjustable Flame Broiler direct flame access slider gives you the ability to direct sear up to 1000 degrees F! Pit Boss is selling this grill exclusively through Lowes, so you can only purchase it online here or at your local store.

What to Look for When Buying a Battery-Powered Pellet Grill

When comparing battery-powered pellet grills to determine which is the for you there are several features that you should consider. Focusing on these key features will help you purchase the right pellet grill.

Battery

If you are in the market for a battery-powered pellet grill one of the first things you should be looking at is the battery. Several features to consider are the run time on a single charge if the battery is included with the grill, and how much an extra battery costs. I personally have three extra batteries for my Halo Prime 300 so that I can take it on week-long camping trips and not worry about running out of power.

Cooking Temperature Range

Most pellet grills offer a cooking temperature range from 180 – 450 degrees F. This is a wide range that offers you to flexibility to smoke food low and slow at temperatures less than 275 degrees F or sear a steak and grill some burgers at 450 degrees. The higher the temperature range the greater the ability you will have to flash sear food, but that’s really the only benefit. 450 degrees is a perfectly fine temperature to grill all types of food.

Cooking Area

The size of the cooking area is important, especially if you plan to entertain larger crowds from time to time. It is always better to have more grilling space and not need it than the other way around. The only two battery-powered pellet grills available in 2023 are portable models, so there is not much option if you are looking for a large cooking area. However, I expect that to change very soon with the introduction of full-size pellet grills that are battery-powered.

Temperature Controls

Temperature control is often overlooked as a feature, but it is important. The Halo Prime 300 offers a digital temperature controller that is adjustable in 5-degree increments. This is a huge advantage over the Pit Boss 150 Battery Powered pellet grill which only offers a manual dial that is set in 25-degree increments. The better the control you have over the temperature the better.
